Syllabus: Using AI to Support Executive Function Skills

Course Overview


This course is designed for students in grades 6–12 and meets in a one-on-one coaching format over 10 hour-long sessions. The course develops students' executive function skills—such as task initiation, organization, time management, and goal setting—while helping them learn how to use AI tools to support these skills in academic and personal contexts. Active learning and reflection are central to each session.

 

What Students Will Learn

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify key executive function skills and understand their impact on learning and daily life.

  • Use AI tools (like ChatGPT) to break down large tasks, create schedules, and generate checklists.

  • Reflect on personal executive function challenges and use AI for self-regulation.

  • Evaluate and improve academic strategies using AI for planning and tracking.

Week 1  |  Introduction to Executive Function & AI

Orientation to executive function skills; Introduction to ChatGPT and setting expectations.


Week 2  |  Planning & Time Management

Use AI to create a daily/weekly planner; Discuss time-blocking.


Week 3  |  Task Initiation

Explore strategies to start tasks using AI prompts; Create motivational scripts with AI.


Week 4  |  Organization

Organize school materials using digital tools; Use AI to categorize and prioritize tasks.


Week 5  |  Goal Setting

Define SMART goals with help from AI; Use AI to reflect on goal progress.


Week 6  |  Working Memory Supports

Explore note-taking methods; Use AI to summarize and create memory cues.


Week 7  |  Self-Monitoring

Use AI journaling prompts for reflection; Practice self-check routines.


Week 8  |  Flexible Thinking

Use AI to brainstorm multiple solutions; Reflect on cognitive flexibility.


Week 9  |  Focus and Distraction Management

Identify distractions and use AI to design personalized strategies for focus and productivity.


Week 10  |  Bringing It All Together

Reflect on tools and strategies; Create a personal AI toolkit.​​
